Discover the Musician Within

With almost 100% of children attending Musicianship this year, we are absolutely delighted, finally, to see everyone benefit from the combined Piano-Musicianship training! It can take a little time to develop some of the more advanced skills, but I’m sure many parents will notice a greater ‘musical intelligence’ in their child and showing greater confidence in general! The Musicianship Faculty are all extremely satisfied with the results that they are achieving with the children.

Wonderful to see so many little Einsteins! Many have chosen not to sit the formal ABRSM exams but 17 students are going ahead from grades 1-4 next month! As all the skills acquired are an accumulation over the years, it is imperative to keep the Musicianship attendance up while learning the piano. We hope to see All of you attending next Sept!
Classes held at 71B Brighton Road
Classes meet for 45 to 60 mins per week.
Musicianship work is lots of FUN! Classes are interactive and can provide a lovely social contrast to the more concentrated and solitary piano lessons!

What are Musicianship Classes?

It has always been our intention to offer a complete programme of musical training…a holistic approach to the learning of the piano, but something that has ultimately proved to be very challenging indeed within the time constraints of a weekly 30 or 45 minute lesson! There simply is not enough time to work on developing many of the invaluable Musicianship skills, which are actually most essential in the nurturing and developing of well-rounded musicians ….. which is our ultimate goal, after all.

To add, as well as the issue of time, many of these skills are best developed in classroom situation and not in the one-to-one.

Areas such as aural awareness (inner-hearing work) through singing, the understanding and writing of musical notation from very simple to more advanced… eventually understanding the very important musical structures of scales and chords, on which all music is based, will fill in some of those gaps of knowledge and in turn, greatly support and compliment the learning at the Piano. Elements introduced at the Piano lesson will, all of a sudden, have a context… like pieces of a jig-saw, eventually forming a musical picture!

Other areas covered at Musicianship class include the Lives and History of the Great Composers and understanding the various elements of their style of writing, again which helps in their understanding of the music they are learning with their piano teacher. There is so, so much to learn and yet there is barely enough time within a piano lesson, to cover repertoire, scales and reading, never mind filling in these gaps!

In effect, limited Musicianship experience, can hold up progress on the instrument. None of us teachers would be doing what we are doing now had we only studied piano without Musicianship training and we feel a huge sense of duty therefore to offer students the opportunity of a Complete Programme of Musical Training!

Grainne and Jennifer were excellent facilitators for Musicianship. Lynsey is just as successful and seems to be fostering a renewed interest by pupils this year!
